A first principle state space model is derived for the Electric Variable Transmission, a novel drive train concept for hybrid electric vehicles. This model is qualitatively validated, and a non-linear MPC control scheme for the model is derived and simulated. A comparison is made in terms of performance between this control scheme and a conventional PI controller. Furthermore, the influence of the prediction horizon length and the method of handling non-linearities in the system model are explored for the MPC controller and a method for proving the robust stability of the model is presented.
