Abstract

During the investigation of the history of the courthouse, an unexpected alteration in the urban fabric - in the immediate surroundings of the Nord-Sud-Fahrt - is discovered. This inner city "highway" of Cologne is the object of research of the graduation studio. The origin of the transformation of the narrow building blocks along the 'Burgmauer' is investigated by studying the development of the inner city, with special attention to the period directly after the war since the alteration took place during the reconstruction of the city. Several causes and eff ects of the transformation of the urban fabric were discovered during the analyses, which gave a certain understanding of the city. Later on, this gained knowledge is used to respond to the current situation with a new intervention: a transformation of the western part of the narrow building blocks and its surrounding tissue. The intervention consists of moving the lane of the 'Zeughausstra?e' to the 'Burgmauer' in which a contrast is created between both streets. A similar intervention was carried out in the past at the westerly building block, which was caused by the rotation of the building block. The transformation of the building blocks is continued by the addition of a new volume on the vacant parking, which is located at the west side of the building block. A market hall will be realized on this location. The motivation for the market hall includes the history of the location, the position of the location on a radial axis which creates a connection with the multicultural district Ehrenfeld. The complexity of the location, with all its elements and its preconditions from the environment, resulted in the choice for a contextual design: the building is sensitive for its environment and fi ts well in the surrounding area. The preconditions result in a required building volume. A concept is developed for a good integration of the building, in which the archetype of a house is transformed. Every contour, derived from possible variations on the archetype, is shaped by an individual element. The elements consist of two steel portals with a building envelope in between. The elements are place side by side, as of this the shape contours can be observed behind each other. As a consequence the visual and physical transformation between the two ends of the building is realized. The building shape which is derived from this process, accommodates the market and takes future development plans of the city museum and the renovation of the metro station Appellhofplatz / Zeughaus into account. The market, a place to see and to be seen, is divided into six departments within its center a food court which represents the international kitchen. This central location is the starting point and the end point for each visitor. The materialization and its appearance match the character of a market hall. The structure, which is integrally included in the design process, has a large infl uence on the appearance. The steel portals of the elements can be observed both from the inside as from the outside, which visualize the transformation of the archetype.
