This paper presents an approach to solve the unit commitment and economic dispatch optimization with various generation units. The approach also facilitates the inclusion of wind production in the study. A model was developed in YALMIP, a modeling language in MATLAB, with several unit and system constraints to study how the unit specifications alter the generation and the associated dispatch costs. Simulations were performed to study how the installed wind capacity, simulation time periods and the flexibility in ramp rates of the units affect the dispatch costs. The results show that by increasing the installed wind capacity and simulation time period, the total operating costs decrease. However, increasing the flexibility up to a certain point increases the dispatch costs.
