Current distribution network planning approaches do no longer meet requirements for future application. A computer-aided tool that searches for the optimal network expansion could help distribution network operators to make better decisions under uncertainty. A consequence of these tools is that many potential network solutions need to be evaluated with a power flow calculation. The AC power flow is widely accepted as most accurate power flow model. However, an iterative approach like the AC power flow delays the evaluation process of network solutions, in particular for emergency conditions. This paper investigates alternative, faster, but less accurate power flow models for application in computer-aided distribution network planning. The speed and accuracy differences with respect to the AC power flow are evaluated for real-world case studies. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis of technical uncertainties in distribution network planning is performed to determine which error is allowed for alternative power flow models.
