Abstract
Selective eating in children with autism spectrum disorder poses unique challenges due to sensory sensitivities, often leading to nutritional deficiencies and stress for families. Existing interventions are effective but resource-intensive and inaccessible due to clinics’ long waiting periods. This study uses participatory design principles, engaging parents in the co-creation of a sensory game-based platform. Through focus group and thematic analysis, key features were identified, including tools for tracking sensory behaviors, progress milestones, and personalized expert guidance. For children, parents prioritized gradual, structured sensory exposure, motivational rewards, and hybrid game-based environments blending digital and physical interactions. Open discussions highlighted the potential of a user-centered digital platform to complement therapies aligning with children’s evolving needs while supporting parents in managing mealtime challenges. The study culminates in a design brief proposing a home-based solution tailored to families’ needs. Future work involves refining, prototyping, and usability testing to ensure its practicality and effectiveness in real-world settings.
