Abstract

Production of adiponitrile from butadiene and hydrogen cyanide uses a catalyst comprising a Group VIII metal complex having at least one tricyclic bifunctional phosphorus, arsenic or antimony ligand. Production of adiponitrile by: (a) reacting butadiene with hydrogen cyanide in the presence of a catalyst, (b) optionally catalytically isomerizing the resulting mixture of pentenonitriles to covert branched nitriles to linear nitriles, and (c) reacting the nitrile mixture with hydrogen cyanide in the presence of a catalyst comprises performing steps (a), (b) and/or (c) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a Group VIII metal complex having at least one ligand of formula (I). A, A = O, Si, SiRR, NR or CRR; R = H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, aryl or heteroaryl; Y, Y = groups comprising one or more P, As or Sb atoms, each directly bonded to at least two O, S or NR' heteroatoms; R' = H, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl; R-R = R, COOR', COOM, SO2R', SO3M, N(R')2, N(R')3X, OR', SR', (CHR''CH2O)xR', (CH2NR')xR', (CH2CH2NR')xR', halogen, CF3, NO2, acyl or CN, or R and/or R can form fused ring systems with 1-3 rings; R = H, Me or Et; M = a cation; X = an anion; x = 1-120. An Independent claim is also included for a process for isomerizing branched aliphatic monoalkenonitriles to linear aliphatic monoalkenonitriles using such a catalyst.
