Validity of chemistry tabulation techniques for engine relevant mixing conditions

Abstract

Developments in engine technology move towards regimes with injection uncoupled from combustion. Auto-ignition is an essential characteristic in these systems. Therefore, its accurate prediction is of paramount importance. Tabulation techniques provide a detailed chemistry description, which is needed to represent the subtle processes that occur during ignition. Strictly, only chemical sources are stored in a table, while assumptions have been made about the mixing process. In this fundamental study, the validity of these flow assumptions is investigated. The Flamelet Generated Manifold approach is applied to PSR and 1D igniting diffusion flame simulations for a wide range of relevant engine conditions.
