Abstract

We have demonstrated femtosecond pulse-induced nonlinear birefringence in a multi-quantum well semiconductor optical amplifier for all-optical switching. Coherent nonlinear optical effects such as two-photon absorption could be responsible for the ultrashort-transient birefringence.
