Abstract

One of the problems we encounter in mathematics service courses is to what extent proofs must play a role. At first we have to decide whether or not to present a proof. A number of arguments pro and contra, provided with many examples, are given. Secondly, if we decide to give a proof, the question arises as to how it can be presented in a suitable way. In many cases so called pre-formal proofs may be just right.
