In this paper we treat the fundamental aspects of the single-orifice pulse tube. This is also the basis for the operation of pulse tubes with more valves and/or inlets. We discuss the dynamic behaviour of the temperature profiles in the regenerator and in the gas in the tube near the hot and cold ends. Furthermore the operation of single-orifice pulse tubes is decribed in general thermodynamical terms.
