Abstract
Improving the sustainability of existing houses is critical to achieving climate goals. The Renovation Explorer (De Renovatieverkenner) project aims to develop simulation models that provide reliable and practical calculations for the existing housing stock in order to obtain more sustainable renovation solutions with healthy and comfortable indoor environments. The problem formulation and the determination of corresponding performance indicators play a crucial role in ensuring accurate and focused simulations to conduct performance assessment of renovation solution(s). In this respect, capturing relevant physical
phenomena without unnecessary complexity, excessive inputs or redundant performance indicators is critical.
This report aims to define the key performance indicators (KPIs) of the Renovation Explorer. These KPIs assess the performance of renovation solutions for single and multiple dwellings. This report offers a framework and presents an inventory of the selected KPIs and documents the decision-making procedure
and methodology that guides the selection of KPIs for the Renovation Explorer. Four main categories of KPIs are identified:
(i) energy
(ii) indoor environmental quality
(iii) costs
(iv) grid interaction
Each category has a number of indicators that evaluate the performance of renovation solutions from different aspects complementing each other.
The report consists of seven chapters. The introduction outlines the general background of the Renovation Explorer and the aim, scope and structure of the report. The methodology chapter describes the adopted methodology to determine the KPIs and the requirements and specifications for each KPI regarding the modelling complexity, inputs and sensitivity. The following chapters focus on each KPI category separately documenting the definition, calculation methods and requirements of each indicator
