Abstract
The influence of laser writing of polyimides on the alignment of liquid crystals was studied. Laser writing offers the possibility towards computer controlled generation of patterns with high speed and large design flexibility. Utilizing this method, hybrid electro-optical cells featuring areas with a different liquid crystal alignment than the non-patterned bulk can be created.
