Abstract

Optical communication techniques have reached a very high level of sophistication. Enormous link transport capacities have been achieved for the main highways of the network. Next challenges are in efficient routing of the traffic in the network nodes, and in bringing this capacity potential also closer to the end user. This paper reports on some recent trends in optical packet routing, and on system concepts to open up the huge capacity directly for very demanding applications.
