The effect of interparticle forces on the expansion of a homogeneous gas-fluidized bed

Abstract

In a great number of experiments, it has been shown that, even in the expanded state of homogeneous fluidization of fine solids, interparticle cohesion forces give rise to the formation of a powder structure with a certain mechanical strength. After introducing the concept of elasticity (compressibility) of this powder structure, the observed phenomena can be explained by means of a perturbation theory which leads to a new dimensionless number NF predicting the limits to where homogeneous fluidization is possible.
