Abstract
The canon of architectural history as found in surveys and textbooks is still based on the contributions of male architects. Were women architects in fact this scarce? Recent projects and publications prove otherwise. The next question is how to arrive from highlighting women in architecture separately to an architectural history that integrates women's contributions. For this, the definition of architectural authorship is essential.
Definitions of authorship in architecture have been based on social conventions and conscious or unconscious assumptions regarding – amongst other aspects– gender. A contextual and empathetic look at the history of architecture can help recalibrate these notions of authorship, so that the polyphony of architecture and the collective nature of architectural production in which women have played a crucial role are given a place in the historiography and canon of architecture.
