System analysis of statistical process control loops

Abstract

Control charts are widely used in industry, but ful integration into a TQM approach is often difficult. This article proposes some ideas towards integration, specifically towards integration with repair and maintenance. A new element with respect to literature is that not only tbe variation of a process, but also the reliability must be controlled. We consider the classica! control loop of a process: a measurement, a control chart and (which is less classical) an Out of Control Action Plan or OCAP. The design of such a loop is anaIysed using Ashby's !aw of requisite variety and using concepts from Failure Mode and Effects Analysis.
