Abstract

The ß-sialon is synthesised from kaolin/coal mixtures which are pelletized and heat treated at 500°C in flowing nitrogen . Batches contain typically 300 g powder with 90 mass % ß-sialon and 10 mass % 15-R phase. The powders are attrition milled to sub micron size, suspended in water and mixed with yttrium oxide as a sintering aid.Suspensions are pH and polyelectrolyte stabilised. The suspensions are used to slip cast tablets which are sintered in a nitrogen atmosphere of 1 bar at 1600 °C.
