Abstract
A single-mode laser subject to weak external optical feedback is a multi-stable system with regard to the selection of external modes. A statistical equilibrium theory is constructed based on the introduction of a characteristic "thermodynamic" potential from which several features such as, operation frequencies, stability, external mode switching statistics and linewidth narrowing factors immediately follow.
