Abstract

The importance of the trace elements in nature is discussed on the basis of its ability to form coordination compds. Topics relevant to the problem are discussed in the following sequence: chem. bonds, mol. orbitals, p-bonding in complex compds., chelates, and catalysis. Two examples of catalysis, in which the coordination compds. act as catalysts, are given: the oxidn. of C2H4 to CH3CHO using PdCl2 and CuCl2 or FeCl3 in H2O as the catalyst, and the hydrogenation of dienes employing Co(CN)53-ion as the catalyst.
