Abstract

A reactor is described for gas phase thermal decompn. It requires samples 10-100 times as large as that needed for mass spectrometric analysis, and gives enough pyrolyzed material for analysis by high resolution capillary gas chromatography. Results are as reproducible as mass spectrometric fragmentation patterns. Pyrolysis gas chromatography shows promise for detn. of position of double bonds in olefins, structure of hetero compds., and individual components in composite gas chromatography peaks.
