Abstract

Photovoltaic solar power systems are today the most prominent sustainable energy source for build- ings. Solar cells generate DC current and, interestingly, many electronically controlled applications like lighting, energy-efficient building heating, ventilation, air-condition and cooling, as well as for in- formation technology, are all already operating from DC supply voltage. Therefore, it would be just consequent to connect DC power sources with DC loads by means of an efficient DC grid. In this presentation advantages of a small-scale low-voltage DC power grid are discussed, including issues related to material savings. In particular, the voltage stability of a 2-phase +/-380V DC grid architec- ture is analyzed, aiming at the replacement of standard 3-phase 230V/400V AC grids in commercial buildings. Practical examples from pilot projects are given.
