Sliding indentation, friction and fracture of a hybrid coating on glass

Abstract

A model discussing the contact of a sliding asperity on a sol–gel coating is given. The model is based on the plowing of a spherical stylus and uses the hardness and the elastic modulus as obtained from conventional indentation testing. A prediction of the friction coefficient at a particular indentation depth and the critical depth to cause cracking is given.
