Abstract

We perform direct numerical simulations of transitional and developed turbulent shear flows. The adequacy of the numerical method is shown in the linear regime of flow perturbations by a comparison between direct numerical simulation and linear stability theory. For this purpose we focus on a two dimensional spatially developing mixing layer. The method is subsequently applied in the nonlinear regime to a simulation of both a separation induced transition and a free shear layer in three dimensions.
