Abstract

Today’s trend in InP/InGaAsP-based Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) is going towards higher number of components integrated on a smaller chip area. One of the major challenges in increasing the integration level is the heat generation of optical amplifiers and laser sources. Therefore there is a need for small laser sources that provide a stable, high quality optical signal at low drive currents. In this paper we present a short-cavity laser with deeply etched Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) mirrors that satisfies this need.
