Abstract
Research is presented on the use of an interactive microcomputer system for learning
English vocabulary in context. The system, called ELLA, offers the pupil a set
of study and test options which are described here. Learning is self-regulated in
the sense that the pupil can choose among the options offered and select the material
to study. However, the system provides support to the pupil in monitoring the
difficulties encountered and the progress made. Experiments were done to evaluate
the system and to investigate the learning strategie s used by the pupils. The results
showed that the pupils did learn with ELLA. However, they did not learn more
than when offered the same options in BOOK format. The strategies employed were
found to vary considerably among pupils. Plans for the implementation of a 'coach'
that would provide advice on the basis of the pupil's performance and strategies
are briefly described.
