Abstract
Design relevant research is often accorded a low scientific status. Whilst user trials are indispensible in the anticipation of future user activities with a newly designed product, user trials are criticized in several respects: lack of theory, no experimental control, no statistical significance and questionable
validity. These comments are typical of a quantification-oriented stance. This paper outlines alternative perspectives, which revaluate a primarily qualititative, in-depth approach, with ample room for the user's perspective and observation of actual product use.
