Abstract

The authors have studied the role of Ge in the electrocatalysis of nitrate redn. on polycryst. Pt by a combination of electrochem. measurements, in situ FTIR spectroscopy and differential electrochem. mass spectrometry (DEMS). The FTIR measurements indicate that adsorbed Ge is not elemental Ge but rather a Ge hydride adlayer, at least in the potential region where nitrate redn. takes place. There is no effect of Ge on the electrocatalytic nitrate redn. in HClO4 solns. for potentials more pos. than 0.2 V (vs. RHE). For potentials
