Abstract

In the search for high power density, on-chip integrated converters, we consider new architectures based on Switched Capacitor Converters. These converters are suited for Power System on-Chip/in-Package (PSoC/PSiP) integration, enabling the use of lower voltage switches when compared to the converters based on inductors. The benefits of the SCC can be further exploited by taking advantage of their switching nature in combination with filtering inductors, forming a hybrid architecture as shown in Fig.1b. Indeed, the internal nodes of these converters provide many useful outputs with floating Pulsed-Width-Modulated voltages. This hybrid combination of SCC and Inductors, the so called Hybrid Switched Capacitor Converter (H-SCC), merges the benefits of both SMPS technologies, providing architectures not yet used in integrated converters and substantially improve the power density of PSoC and PSiP.
