Abstract

In two dimensional configurations electrostatic modes are shown to be excited with frequency and parity characteristics such as to affect significantly the orbital (`quasi-bananas' of trapped ions by proper mode-particle resonances. Processes of this kind may in fact provide an effective scattering mechanism in regimes where the single-particle collision mean free paths are considerably longer than the periodic particle excursions
