Abstract
This paper deals with recent developments in the dynamics of nonlinear mechanical systems excited by periodic loads. If such a nonlinear system contains linear components with many degrees of freedom, a component mode synthesis technique can be applied to reduce teh number of linear dof.
First, the long-term dynamics of the above type of systems is considered, taking a beam system with nonlinear support as a typical example. This system reveals very rich, complex dynamic behaviour. Next, the transient behaviour is considered, and in particular the determination of the basins of attraction by means of manifolds as well as cell mapping.
