Abstract
We are considering pulsed power technology to enable wide meter diameter, 5000-meter-deep drilling for safe and permanent disposal of nuclear waste. The tool will be a drilling tower driven by repetitive pulsed plasma of GW peak power at the mud-rock interfaces of the drilling front. The challenges are efficiency in cost and in energy, a very short duration electric power pulse, and performance at high hydrostatic pressure and elevated temperatures.
