Abstract

New products are increasingly developed in distributed teams with members from independent companies. Organizing product data between companies appears to raise new problems compared to product data management inside companies. This paper pro poses some theoretical principles for product, version and status coding. These principles are then applied to analyse and discuss the approaches followed in two real cases. From this discussion it can be concluded that current practice tends to cause confusion, errors and delay in collaborative development projects. Using simplified version and status coding schemes in a separate collaboration space can solve these problems.
