Batch processing has been viewed as unfashionable compared to large-scale continous processing, by engineers active in the mainstream chemical industry. This manifests itself in the lack of validated tools for the design of batch processes during fast-track scale-up activities. As part of a program to define a novel methodology for a reliable and speedy batch process design DSM Pharma Chemicals and Fontys University of Professional Education have cooperated in a case study. A tool was developed which can predict the behavior of large scale batch distillation processes by way of a fundamental approach.
