    Abstract

    To better understand some aspects of the mechanism by which fillers may reinforce polymers, a system contg. glass spheres in a polystyrene [9003-53-6] matrix with coupling interlayers of varying strength was prepd. and studied by SEM. Strength increase is achieved by compatibilization arising from interaction between the interlayer of trimethoxysilyl-modified polybutadiene (no.-av. mol. wt. 1000) bound to the filler and the matrix
