Abstract
This paper presents the first evidence for generation of nitric oxide (NO) by the plasma needle. Plasma needle is an atmospheric glow generated by a radio-frequency excitation in a helium-air mixture. This plasma source can be used for in vivo treatment, e.g. for disinfection of wounds/dental cavities and for microsurgery. Nitric oxide is a physiologically important radical; its presence may make the plasma suitable for many therapies, including treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Mass spectrometric measurements have been performed under various plasma conditions, in order to study the conversion of atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen into other species. Significant gas conversion (up to 20%) has been observed and large amounts of NO have been detected.
