Via PIXE with a 3 × 3 µm2 proton microbeam spatial distributions of Na, Mg, P, S, K, Ca and Fe were measured in 50 × 50 µm2 areas of rat heart, sliced into 10–15 µm thick cryosections. The hearts were subjected to normal perfusion, ischemia and reperfusion. Substantial changes were found in tissue after 40 min of reperfusion, where locally elevated Ca levels and decreased K levels were observed. For assessment of artefacts due to sample preparation and handling also electron microscopy was used.
