Abstract

The phase diagram of the CaO-K20-AI203 system is presented. A new compound wi th composition 2K20·3CaO·AI203 was found. CaO segregat es at t he grain boundaries of alumina. It is believed that i t resides there as CaO·6AI203. For this reason special attention was paid to this compound in relation to ß-lumina. In this area a metastable solid solution was found. Thermo dynamic calculations were carried out to evaluate the experimental results. These calculatlons made it possible to estimate the Gibbs energy of formation of the new compound. We found a value of -13531 kj/mole.
