Abstract
Double-crank mechanisms of the lambda -type are optimized such that minimum deviations from a given line-segment are attained. This is obtained using a closed set of equations of which the crucial one is only of the 4th order. Additionally, the four-bars are restricted to those having optimum transmission angles ( mu //1 equals mu //2) as well as to those having symmetrical coupler curves. It is found that deviations are small in comparison to those that appear if Ball's point is at the base of the design
