Operational equivalence of self-switching in MZI and nonlinear polarization switches based on SOAs

Abstract

Numerical simulations and experiments demonstratethe equivalence of two self-switches based on semiconductor opticalamplifiers, namely the nonlinear polarization switch and theMach–Zehnder interferometer. This equivalence is highlighted byintroducing a one-to-one functional similarity among the switchcomponents. By means of a detailed study on gain and phase differencevariations in both switches, we introduce a method to determinethe configurations in which the switches exhibit an equivalentpower transfer function. Their operational equivalence is experimentallyconfirmed.Index Terms—All-optical self-switching, power equalization,semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs).
