Abstract

Machine tool chatter is a limiting factor for the performance and efficiency of the milling process. In this paper, a method is presented to online detect chatter before it has fully developed. Such early online chatter detection allows us to interfere in the process such that the occurrence of chatter and marks on the workpiece are avoided. The method can be applied using various sensors, however, the use of accelerometers is preferred for practical reasons. The proposed detection method is evidenced by experimental tests.
