On the theory of dc conductance in a one-dimensional statically disordered system

Abstract

Within the framework of a weak-disorder model, the response on a dc electric field of electrons in a one-dimensional disordered potential is studied on a time scale significantly exceeding the time scale during which linear-response theory may have validity. It is shown that dc current response linear in the field occurs provided that (i) the field strength is sufficiently large and (ii) all nonlinear perturbing effects are included. The saturation value of the current is in formal agreement with Landauer's expression for the conductance. The failure of linear-response theory in reproducing these results is demonstrated.
