Abstract

Protracted discussions on concepts like the momentum of electromagnetic waves in matter and the pressure of sound indicate that the interpretation of the momentum balance in non-relativistic physics can be less clear than that of the energy balance. It is shown that this can be understood from the theory of a special class of wave equations, called potential waves.
