Abstract

This paper addresses two important aspects of engineeringsize effects in miniaturizing metallic components and themodeling thereof. The critical role of processing induced sizeeffects is emphasized, which tend to be easily forgotten inexperimentalworkor engineeringinterpretations of size effects. The second aspect is related to the need for a rigorous straingradient enrichment in crystal plasticity modeling, as the resultof coarse graining the interaction between discrete dislocations. The physical origin of the energetic enrichment isdiscussed andits deterministic derivation is briefly confronted with theanalogous result obtained froma statistical mechanics analysis.
