Abstract

A review. Recent developments concerning the novel high-pressure Si3N4 phase with the spinel structure are reviewed. Several methods to prep. this material are discussed. A no. of properties, like high hardness (= 30 GPa) and a bandgap of about 3.5 eV, make this material of potential interest for various applications. By varying the compn. it is possible to manipulate the properties in a controlled way.
