Abstract
By using the methods of gas dynamics the work done during expansion of an infinite mass of gas at finite speed is calculated. For the case that this speed is small compared with the speed of sound it is verified by an explicit calculation that this process will raise the entropy of the gas by the amount required by thermodynamics. In the last section some remarks on the expansion of a finite mass of gas are made.
