    Abstract

    Nonlinear optical compds. are described which comprise an electron-donating group and an electron-accepting group linked by a conjugated II system, the acceptor group being a sulfone group with an alkyl, hydroxylalkyl, or alkyl(meth)acrylate substituent. Nonlinear optical media comprising a polymer matrix and polarly oriented nonlinear optical materials having sulfone acceptor groups are also described, as are devices (e.g., frequency doublers) employing the media. The media may be prepd. by heating a solid soln. of sulfone acceptor group-contg. nonlinear optical material, in PMMA to a temp. above the glass transition temp. of the solid soln., elec. poling in a d.c. field, and cooling below the glass transition temp.
