Abstract

This chapter looks at the relationship between airlines and airports on a European level, with a special focus on the relationship between low-cost carriers and secondary airports. Recognizing the main steps in the liberalization process of the aviation industry allows us to understand the chal1engcs that arose in supply and demand in the air transportation market and analyze development trends. With the arrival of new competitors, carriers and airports have changed their market stratcgies and progressively focused on the exploitation of potential demand. A survey of published literature is made on this theme and new airline-airport development trends are discussed. Examples are drawn trom the European and the Italian market whilst a case study on airports in Rome illustrates the main competitive issues.
