The naming, addressing and routing functions of a network become more important as the demand for interworking, and thus relaying, increases. This article summarizes the various OSI concepts, which are usually dispersed over various places or even assumed implicitly in the literature. This article is actually part one of a series of two articles: part two deals with LAN/WAN interworking.
