Abstract

The thermo-acoustic stability of a combustor is characterized as function of the flame behavior. By making use of a network model all the eigenmodes of the combustor for all possible combinations between phase and gain of the flame transfer function are calculated. As a result, one obtains an instability map of the combustor for arbitrary burners. Such map may then be used to select the most stable burner for a given combustion device. The results are verified by measurements on a laboratory setup. The approach may be used to determine burner design guidelines for stable operation or select the proper burner for a given combustor geometry.
