Abstract

This paper presents a review of the electrical performance and equivalent models of on-chip transformers fabricated in IC technology. The effects of parasitic parameters and imperfect coupling between transformer coils are included in the compact equivalent model. A complete signal analysis for the passive component is done based on the mixed-mode S-parameters to evaluate the electrical performance and equivalent models under different excitations. Considering the transformers’ usages in RFIC design, the influences of the center-taps and their load impedance are also analyzed with the corrected mix-mode S-parameters. Finally, Y-parameters converted from the mixed-mode matrix are employed to estimate the transformer’s self-inductances and coupling factor.
